New name, new look, same old team.
It's officially been confirmed that Damwon Gaming KIA will now be known as Dplus KIA from January 9 onwards. According to the press release, the name change "is a nod to the organisation’s iconic legacy, with the ‘D’ serving as homage to Damwon Gaming’s original name and the “plus” representing limitless connectivity and expansive potential for a bright future."
As a three-time LCK regional champion and the 2020 world champion, Dplus KIA had gone through quite a few changes to get where it is today. While still one of the best LCK teams, it has fallen off its pedestal over the past year with the hope that the 2023 season will see some better results. Joon young Lee, Vice Chairman/COO of Dplus KIA also had this to say:
Dplus KIA is one of the most successful teams in the history of League of Legends and it’s time for our brand to take its rightful place amongst the most popular organizations in the world. We’re excited to create a new chapter in this organization’s storied history with this phenomenal team and the bold projects we have in store for this year that will bring a new wave of fans to the Dplus KIA family.
Dplus went through a whirlwind of emotions the past year, finishing third and fourth during the LCK regular season and having to rely on a first-place finish in the LCK Regional Finals to make it to Worlds. And even then, the team could only settle for a quarterfinal exit at the hands of fellow LCK compatriot, Gen.G Esports.
The organisation has also gone through several changes in its latest lineup, bringing in top talents like Worlds 2022 AD carry winner, Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu alongside Kim "Canna" Chang-dong. While it remains to be seen just how well Dplus KIA can perform, it won't be that much longer with the LCK starting in a few short weeks. I am running a few minutes late; my previous meeting is running over.
Alongside the name change, Dplus KIA will also be introducing a new theme and jersey to the organisation, paving the way for a team that has since been reborn under a new banner.
